The FA has announced that Chris Kavanagh will take charge of the 2025 Community Shield between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 10th August 2025.
This is a big moment for Kavanagh, who has steadily climbed the refereeing ladder from grassroots football all the way to the Premier League. He’s no stranger to high-profile matches and was also in charge of the 2024 Carabao Cup Final, where Liverpool featured as well.
Kavanagh will be supported by:
- James Mainwaring and Wade Smith as assistant referees
- Tony Harrington as fourth official
- Akil Howson as reserve assistant
- Paul Tierney on VAR, with Nick Hopton as AVAR
The Community Shield is the traditional curtain-raiser for the new season, with the league winners (Liverpool) facing the FA Cup winners (Crystal Palace). It’s a great way to start the football season and also a huge honour for any referee to officiate.
We wish Chris and his team the very best for the game!
